BANDA ACEH > SHOPPING & USEFUL THINGS


Click to enlargeSouvenirs: There are a number of shops along Jl. Safiatuddin next to Rex in Peunayong. There are also many souvenirs to be found in the Central market.

Gold: Aceh has for many centuries been famous for its gold handicraft. There are a row of shops along Jl. Perdagangan, next to the Grand Mosque.

Markets: There are several small markets spread all over town, but the major one is the Central market, directly behind the Grand Mosque. There you find everything and is well worth a visit. Open all day. The food market in Peunayong is also nice. Open: 05.00-08.00. The fish market further out along the river is spectacular in the morning.

Fruits: Fruits can be found in many areas, but along Jl. Pocut Baren in Peunayong the selection is good.

Betel: If you like betel chewing, do your shopping on Jl. Tgk Chiek Pante Kulu, next to the Grand Mosque. From early morning until midnight. Betel is called "sir" in Indonesian.

Click to enlargeSupermarkets: There are several supermarkets. Pante Pirak can be found on three locations; Jl. Khairil Anwar in Peunayong, Jl. Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah (near the big 5-street junction in Peunayong), and JL. T. Hasan Dek Beurawe. Blang Rakal has two locations. Barata Shopping Center on Jl. Mohd. Jam, opposite the Grand Mosque.

Mall: Hermes Palace Mall is the only modern style mall in Banda Aceh. The department store Matahari has an outlet here. It is on Jl. T.Hasan Dek Beurawe. Open: 10.00-22.00.

Mobile Phones: Many shops along Jl. Panglima Polim in Peunayong sell mobile phones. Phone credit is sold everywhere along the streets, especially in the evenings. It is a good idea to buy an Indonesian phone number. It is very inexpensive and saves a lot on calls and sms.

Tailors: Tailors can for example be found next to the river near the Grand Mosque.

Traditional Barber Shops: (Tukang Pangkas) comes highly recommended. They cut your hair with great care, shave your chin, massage your shoulders, and even clean your ears if you want. The prices are just a fraction of European prices. There are many of them in the area between Jl. Pocut Baren and Jl. Supratman. Western style salons are called "salon".

Business Center: Kopro is a cooperative owned well educated professionals of all kinds. They have a nice business center at Tower Cafe opposite Taman Sari. Ph: 0812 6964 019. Good value. Open: 09.00-17.00. The Cafe is open 08.00-24.00 and has WiFi.

Tourist Information: Banda Aceh Tourist Information in Ulee Lheue, see map, is informative. They are very active in promoting their town. Open: Mon.-Fri: 08.00-12.00 and 14.00-17.00. sanmail_hasan@yahoo.com
